As Cornwall prepares to host the historic arrival of the Olympic Flame in the UK on the evening of Friday, 18 May, residents in towns and villages across Cornwall are putting the finishing touches to their plans for celebrating the passage of the Olympic Torch Relay through their local communities on Saturday, 19 May.
The Olympic Flame will be flown to RNAS Culdrose from Athens on board British Airways flight ‘BA2012’. Details of the arrival ceremony are still being finalised but the guest list is expected to include a number of high profile names.
After spending the night at RNAS Culdrose the Flame will be flown by naval helicopter to Land’s End ready for the official start of the London 2012 Olympic Torch Relay, presented by Coca-Cola, Lloyds TSB and Samsung. 8,000 Torchbearers will carry the Olympic Flame for approximately 300 metres each, passing the Olympic Flame from torch to torch until it reaches the Olympic Stadium on the eve of 27 July.
The route through Cornwall sees the Flame carried through 21 communities on Saturday, 19 May. The first Cornish Torchbearer will begin their run from the world famous First and Last signpost at Land’s End just after 7 am. The Flame will then travel though Sennen, Newlyn, Penzance, Marazion, Rosudgeon, Ashton, Breage, Helston, Falmouth, Truro, Newquay, St Stephen, Trewoon, St Austell, Stenalees, Bugle, Lanivet, Bodmin, Liskeard and Saltash before crossing into Devon on the Tamar Bridge at the end of the day.
